Deep Tissue Massage:
Deep tissue massages are meant to “unstick” the fibers of a muscle while helping to release deeply-held tension, remove toxins, relax and soothe the muscles. This form of massage is both therapeutic and corrective. This technique focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Deep tissue massage’s main goal is to release chronic tension patterns through slow strokes and deep pressure on the contracted areas. This technique goes along the fibers of the muscles, tendons and fascia. Deep tissue massage aids in the break up and elimination of scar tissue. This massage technique focuses on more specific areas and causes temporary soreness the night of the massage. If done properly, you will feel your best in a day or two.
Why get a Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massages feel good and is beneficial to your health. Stressed muscles block oxygen and nutrients which causes inflammation and build-up of toxins in the muscle tissue. Deep tissue massage helps to loosen muscle tissues, toxins and enhance blood and oxygen to circulate properly. After this massage, drinking extra water is recommended to flush out the toxins from the body.
How does Scar Tissue form in the muscles?
The toxic environment we live in poisons our bodies, which is breeding ground for scar tissue and crystallization build-up, which leads to irritation and inflammation. This in turn, creates more Lactic Acid to build in your muscles and cause more soreness and pain. Our blood system bathes tissues by bringing oxygen and nutrients to the cells and carbon dioxide and toxins from the cells. This extra build-up in the muscles, tendons and ligaments increases pain and lack of movement.
When we injure our muscles, scar tissue attaches itself to the tendons and the origin and insertion points. This “protective device” enables movement of larger muscle groups, which in turn restricts and immobilizes smaller muscle groups. X-Rays and Ultrasounds do not detect scar tissue and can only be identified by a certified massage therapist.
Phasic Muscles: by Lisa Eileen Lentz, LMP, 10/23/06
Phasic Muscles are muscles that fatigue faster than other musculature in the body. Why is this?
Phasic Muscles are: fast-twitch, glycolic metabolism, fast fatigability, low capillary density, low number of spindle cells, and weaken due to dysfunction.
Translation please!
Simply stated, there is less blood flow, and fewer cells indicating a broader and longer base of movement and stretching, if you will congestion. Because of this, metabollically, the musculature is more likely to be saturated with lactic acid, various proteins that settle in the tissue, and other contributing enzymes.
Rather than shortening, like Tonic Muscles (slow-twitch, slow fatigability, high capillary density), the Phasic Muscles will actually weaken. (Tonic muscles with shorten or contract rather than weaken)
Some of the Phasic Muscles include:
Mid-Thoracic Erectors (adjacent to the spine in the rib cage area)
Rhomboid Muscles (between the shoulder blades)
Trapezius, Ascending Portion (Between the shoulder blades and approaching the neck)
Trapezius, Horizontal Portion (Along the top of the shoulders to the shoulder joint)
Pecotalis Major, Sternal Portion (along the sternum in the center of the chest)
Triceps Brachaii (the back of the arm above the armpit to above the elbow)
Vastus Medialis (quad)
Vasuts Lateralis (Quad)
Gluteus Medius (Posterior)
Gluteus Maximus (Primary muscle in the hips)
Gluteus Minimus (Supporting hip muscle)
Tibealis Anterior (Front of the calf , big toe side)
Peroneal Group (the small toe side of the calf, runs along the outside of the calf from below the knee
& wraps into the side of the foot)
Phasic Muscles receive less nutrition and enervation than the other musculature in the body, which is why they are easily sprained and injured.
Here are some easy steps to take to ensure a healthy and balanced body:
1. Eat right and on time. This keeps a good supply of healthy proteins, vitamins and minerals in the body. When
you do not eat on time, over an extended period, the body draws perceives that it is starving and draws nutrition
from the secondary Phasic Muscles and uses it in the Tonic (primary supporting) Muscles. Also, since some of
the Phasic Muscles are connected to Diabetes and Dibebetic Neuropathy, eating right and on-time will aid in
preventing the weakening of this tissue.
2. Drink lots of water. Staying well hydrated keeps the body tissue flushed out, thus helping to prevent the stagnation and build up of the enzymes that ultimately create pain, trigger, points, and discomfort.
3. Have a balanced stretching and exercise routine. Make sure that you are stetching not only the Tonic Muscles, but also gently stretching the Phasic Muscles.
4. Try a good Contrasting Hydro when you experience Chronic Pain and Soreness. This is simply
alternating hot and cold, ending with the same temperature that you started with. (see aftercare instructions in the
main menu!). This is especially helpful with the easily weakened Phasic Muscle.
5. Check with your Doctor, Physical Therapist, Certified Nutritionist, and your health care providers for
any helpful ideas and information in keeping your Phasic Muscles as healthy as your Tonic Muscles.
6. Get a good night's sleep. This gives the body time to de-compress, and de-stress.
7. Keith Innes,D.C., suggests that you walk heel-to-toe, with a straight spine, and moving from your hips. Making sure that from your head to your feet, that you feel the muscles working together as you walk slowly and mindfully. Be sure to check in with you Chiropractor as well, they are a goldmine of helpful treatment and information!
Scientific Breakthrough,, Sound Healing destroys Fibroids:

Simon Heather e-mail newsletter:
Machine Destroys Tumours With Noise
Doctors are using a pioneering new technique which destroys tumours using nothing more than loud noise. Using a powerful beam of ultrasound they are able to zap diseased tissue without leaving a scar, writes Sky News Health Correspondent Thomas Moore.
It is being tested on women suffering from fibroids, who would once have had to have a hysterectomy.
The sound is too high pitched for the human ear to hear, and there is no radiation, no toxic chemotherapy, and no scar.
Shirley Coombs had been lined up for a hysterectomy. She has fibroids - benign tumours that grow in the womb and affect one in three women. But with high powered ultrasound doctors will zap the growths and leave her womb intact. She will be able to have children.
"I like the idea of leaving everything intact. I can carry on with my life rather than be laid up for 4 to 6 weeks with a hysterectomy. "
The new zap-while-you- scan technique allows doctors to blast tumours with unprecedented precision.
Patients lie, face down, in an MRI scanner. Doctors outline the tumour on high-resolution images of the body. Then they zap the target, using a dish of water as a lens to focus a beam of ultrasound down to a tiny point. In just one second they heat cells to 55 degrees, and watch the scan as the tissue is destroyed.
For Professor Wladyslaw Gedroyc there are benefits on both sides: "We can treat patients in a single session. They walk in, they walk out. There is no bed stay, there are no scars, and no more unpleasant surgical complications. "
The beam is 10,000 times more powerful than the ultrasound used to scan pregnant women. Yet it's only a few millimetres across, allowing doctors to destroy diseased tissue, without harming healthy cells.
Trials at St Mary's Hospital in London show significant improvements in 80 per cent of women. For now the zapper is the only one of its kind in the country.
But the doctors say their results speak for themselves. And in time patients around the country will have their tumours obliterated using nothing more than the power of sound.

Medical Massage: by Lisa Eileen Lentz, LMP Medical massage is vastly different than many other types of massage. It is not the same as Therapeuric Massage, Relaxation Massage, Specific Injury Treatment, or any other type of bodywork.
Medical Massage is usually done in a medical setting, like a chemotherapy treatment center, hospital, nursing home, assisted living facility, or clinic.
Medical Massage is for patients that have had recent surgery, have or are having regular chemotherapy, radiation therapy or some form of treatment for cancer, MS, and many other conditions.
In order to work with clients/patients that are classified in the realm of Medical Massage, the therapist must work with and be trained in this area of working with the body. I studied and worked for two years at Steven's hospital, working with heart transplant patients, post aneurysm patients, mothers that had just given birth, total knee and hip replacements, celllulitis, brain tumors and brain surgery, MS, seizure disorder, recent abdominal surgeries, patients with ligament tears and repairs, and cancer patients post operatively and going through treatments. I also worked on the psych-ward with patients that had attempted suicide, were schizophrenic, bipolar, manic depressive, and split personality. Certainly, this experience was one of the most intense learning periods in my career. After I had been a student, I was asked to assist in training the massage therapists in the program, which I did for about a year.
Medical massage helps and assists the body in recovering from the stress due to surgery. When person undergoes surgery, the body is positioned with a series of bolsters to expose the area of the body to be operated on to the surgeon and patients optimal advantage. Post surgically, many of the aches and pains are related not only the the surgery itsself, but to the way the body was positioned during the procedure.
In a regular Relaxation Massage, the client usually lays both on their back (supine) and on their stomach (prone), during the treatment. At some point in the massage, the client is invited to turn over so that the full body Relaxation (therapeutic) can be done. In Medical Massage, the client/patient stays in one position and is ONLY moved within the parameters that the doctor has given in the chart notes (or via note to you). The only mobilization that occurs is within the guidelines specifically for that condition!
Additionally, in a Medical Massage, the therapist washes their hands when they enter the room, and when they leave the room, due to the possible risk of infection. For instance with Clostridium Difficile (an infection of the intestinal tract), this can be passed from client/ patient to therapist, and proper handwashing procedures MUST be utilized. The therapists also does not want to introduce any pathogens into the environment where the client/patient is recooperating.
Now that you have an idea what Medical Massage is about, you are wondering, what modalities can be used?
Reiki, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Touch, Some Cranio Sacral, Hand and Foot Reflexology, Very Light Swedish to specific and isolated areas of the body. Since Massage does increase the fluidity of the body, each medical condition has it's own guidelines for the safest and healthiest modalities for that person. Keeping a good, clear line of communication with the coordinating doctor is critical.
Pyschologically speaking, the dynamic between the therapist and the client is quite different than other forms of bodywork. The client is vulnerable, having been prodded, poked, and usually having gone through invasive procedures. What they need, want, and crave, is to be heard and respected, to feel some sense of control within the medical arena. As a therapist, it is my job to make sure that my communications are on a clear and equal level with the client/patient, and that I help to create a calm and tranquil healing environment (even in a hospital!). Let the client lead, if they want to talk, listen, if the want to rest while you are working, let them rest. It is simple, I am there to make sure that their level of comfort is met.
With Medical Massage, the treatments are often much shorter than regular massage. Work slowly and gently, keep it soft and fluid for the comfort of the client/patient.
Look at the client when you talk to them, and really listen. Let them know what you will be doing and what the medical staff has said that you can do that day. Let the client be part of their own healing process. Answer any questions they have clearly, let them know that you are there for them. Be that gentle, kind, and soothing, presence.
Shamanism and Animals, by Siete Lobos
I am often asked by my students and clients what the significance of animals is in our lives. Why are we drawn to some more than others? Why are some of us drawn more to certain flora than others?
It is believed in Shamanic Tradition, that the moment that you are born, that an animal, nagual, is born at the same time. This animal has all the traits and characteristics that represent your strengths, talents, innate skills, and achilles heel.
For instance the Opposum, in self defense will play dead to make itsself an undesireable target. What a fascinating skill. Does it learn to play dead, or is it this woven into his/her animal nature?
A little of both, actually! Just as you have innate skills and abilities, they are certainly shaped by the familial patterning that you see and learn.
The Porcupine is a creature that craves peace, but when necessary can eject his quills and seriously hurt or even kill the would be predator.
The mouse, for all of her burrowing and quiet ways, can slip into small spaces unseen, finding a small forgotten crumb to sustain her family.
Dolphins are the midwives to the whales. It is said that the Dolphin brings the wisdom from the whale forth into the world. Dolphins and Whales are also very group oriented and do poorly when seperated from the pod, their support system. Their songs soothe the human nervous system, their chirps clicks, and whirs, communicate an idea in very specific and animated ways.
The Turtle, wise being of the sea and land, represents Gaia, Mother Earth. The turtle has been the subject of many Koan's in Japanese history, for their bones are on the outside, and their skin on the inside!
The turtle s patient and can wait out any situation, he can hibernate for long periods of time, like frog, and live a long and healthy life.
Each animal instinctively lives their life, with ther positive and negative characteristics and makes no excuse for being themselves, for living authentically.
If you see the same animal repeatedly, have a curious mind, and discover what lesson they have for you.
Study them, learn about their skills, habits, and instincts, be their advocate!
Like Spider spinning her web, let the animals connect their wisdom to your life. Make your web strong and light so that you can catch all the goodness and abundance that comes of a well-spun and flexible trap.
Light Eagle and Hawk, don't be afraid to declare your truth. Like the Buffalo, who always returns home to the core of her/his value, family first.
Even Polar Bear with her hidden secret, a black tongue and black skin underneath the blinding thick white fur, can camouflage on the snow, and wait for her prey, the seal to venture into her territory for a quick meal for her cubs. Even then, he kills swiftly and mercifully, the seal does not die slowly.
Animals are draw to healing plants and flowers, and know what they need. When your body craves a certain food, with a curious mind, and keeping in mind that it is not pure junk!, look it up. Find out why your body is asking for it. The same is true for supplements, but please check with your doctor before taking anything, as not all pharmaceuticals are compatible with homeopathy.
Animals are willing and open to experiencing all of the facet of who they are, this is one of the greatest lessons that you and I can learn. It is easy to show only your best, even it is puts you energetically, emotionally, and mentally in the red. Like the animals in your life, do what you can do, in that moment, to the best of your ability. Be who you are, no more, no less.
Animals follow the natural cycles of their lives, a time to sleep, a time to mate, a time to hibernate, a time to hunt, a time to eat, a time to nurture their young, a time to let their children go, a time to fight, a time to die, a time to walk, run, swim, or fly away from a losing situation. They know their boundaries.
They know who they are. They are no less and no more than their authenic selves!
Surely, you and I can learn from Mother Nature's creatures, maybe one day, we can even learn to value them as much as we do our narcissitic nature!
